The most common UPS tracking statuses, explained

Updated over a week ago

When you track your package on the UPS website, you'll see a variety of tracking statuses at different times.

A list of the most common UPS tracking statuses

Here's a list of the most common tracking statuses from UPS, and what they mean:

  • LABEL CREATED: You have created your label, and UPS has received the details of your shipment and its tracking number.

  • SHIPPED/ON THE WAY: UPS has received your package and scanned it into its network. It’s now moving through the UPS network and has a scheduled delivery date, which you can see on the UPS website and your shipment page in Pirate Ship.

    • Note: It's not uncommon for shipments to stay in this status until UPS marks them as "OUT FOR DELIVERY." If your package needs to travel a long distance, its tracking status likely won’t update again until UPS scans it into a destination hub.

  • OUT FOR DELIVERY: Your package has arrived at a UPS facility in your recipient's region, and UPS has handed it off to a driver for the final delivery.

    • Depending on the type of address you're shipping to, delivery times may vary. UPS typically delivers packages to residential addresses between 9 am and 7 pm, but they can sometimes come later.

    • For commercial addresses, UPS will deliver the package by the end of the business day.

  • DELIVERED: UPS has delivered your package to your recipient, and they have recorded a timestamp of the delivery.

    • If your label includes Signature Confirmation, you can view the signature that the UPS delivery driver captured by navigating to the UPS tracking page for your shipment and clicking the "Proof of Delivery" link.

    • You'll be able to see the signature that the UPS driver obtained on the pop-up.

  • DELIVERED TO A UPS ACCESS POINT: UPS has dropped off the package at a UPS Access Point location.

    • The UPS tracking page will display the designated UPS Access Point, and your recipient can pick the package up at their convenience.

  • TRANSFERRED TO A POST OFFICE FOR DELIVERY: UPS has dropped off your package at your recipient's local Post Office, and USPS will handle the final delivery.

    • This can occur for several reasons, including if you or your recipient requested it.

    • When this happens, final delivery may take an extra day or two.

  • EXCEPTION: Your package is still in the UPS network, but something unexpected occurred that might cause UPS to change the delivery date.

    • This can be the result of an error or something else, such as the delivery driver not being able to access the final delivery point.

    • Whatever the case, you'll be able to see the reason for the exception in the "Shipment Progress" section of the UPS tracking page.

    • When the delivery date changes, the new date will be displayed on the same page, along with an updated tracking status.
