Tracking Emails: What are DKIM and Return Path records and how do I verify them?

Learn about the email verification you can add with DKIM and Return Path DNS records

Updated over a week ago

In Settings > Tracking Emails, when you edit your email template, you can optionally choose to Verify DKIM and Verify Return Path.

  • Email Addresses Must Be Verified First: The option to verify your DKIM and Return Path records is only available after you've verified your email address.

What is DKIM?

DKIM is an optional DNS (Domain Name System)-based email authentication that allows Pirate Ship to prove we have permission to send emails on your behalf.

  • How to Add a DKIM Record: You'll need access to your domain name's DNS settings to add a DKIM record. These are usually available in the dashboard of wherever you bought your domain name.

    • The exact instructions are available in Pirate Ship when you click the "Verify DKIM" button in your Tracking Email template👌

  • DNS Providers Have Different Processes: When verifying your DKIM in Pirate Ship, the need to enter the DKIM record with or without the domain & top-level domain name depends on the settings of your specific DNS provider.

    • Example: for some hosting services like GoDaddy, the DKIM record won't include your domain and will stop after "domainkey" (e.g. "20200511061207pm._domainkey").

    • Check with your hosting service to know if they need your domain here!

What is a Return Path?

A Return Path is a secondary DNS-based email authentication that lets Pirate Ship prove we're sending emails on your behalf.

  • Why You Should Verify Your Return Path: While it's optional, verifying your Return Path along with verifying DKIM is the best way to ensure deliverability for your tracking emails (aka to make sure your emails don't end up in your recipients' spam folders 😉)

    • If you use our tracking emails but don't have your email verified, you don’t need to take any action. Pirate Ship’s sender address is already in compliance 💪

  • Verifying a Return Path Record: To verify your Return Path, click the blue "Verify Return Path (optional)" button when editing your Tracking Email template. Once your Return Path is verified, this button will turn green.

    • Note that Return Path verification isn't immediate. You'll likely need to wait about 48 hours to see the change reflected in your Tracking Email template.
